Civics 101

Civics 101 continued to tackle the basics of how the U.S. government works, with timely topics, educational opportunities and new partnerships. In fiscal year 2021-22, the podcast achieved a significant milestone by increasing production to weekly episodes. Shows tackled subjects related to events taking place in real-time such as “Gerrymandering,” “Election Security” and “The President and the Price of Gas.” The team also tackled broader subjects such as “Should Animals Have Human Rights,” “Diplomacy” and “The First National Park.

In November 2021, hosts Nick Capodice and Hannah McCarthy were guests on the C-Span program Washington Journal. After speaking with Jesse Holland, they took calls from listeners around the country. The American Bar Association recognized Civics 101 with the Silver Gavel Award for its “Supreme Court Series.” This 10-episode series highlights Supreme Court decisions impacting civil rights and the right to privacy.

New Voices in Environmental Journalism

NHPR’s environmental and climate coverage, By Degrees, tells stories of the challenges and solutions of a warming planet. But it doesn’t stop there. The team also explores how climate change intersects with other issues of our time, such as the pandemic and a generational reckoning on racial justice. In February, 2022, NHPR welcomed Mara Hoplamazian as the new climate change, energy and environment reporter. They arrived at NHPR in 2021 as the Barbara and Dick Couch Fellow. In February of 2022, Hoplamazian was featured nationally on Science Friday with their piece ”Climate Change Ruins the World Championship Sled Dog Derby,” as originally heard on By Degrees.

In February 2022, NHPR’s award-winning podcast, Outside/In, welcomed new host and senior producer Nate Hegyi. Before joining NHPR he covered public lands, federal agencies and tribal affairs as a reporter for the Mountain West News Bureau, a consortium of NPR member stations. Hegyi’s breadth of experience and perspective were quickly on display in episodes such as “Call of the Void” and the podcast’s summer series Yard Work.

Visibles – growing our Spanish language news service

The team that produces ¿Qué Hay de Nuevo, New Hampshire?, the state’s first daily Spanish-language newscast in New Hampshire, launched a new weekly video series called Visibles. Each week, Gabriela Lozada, a Report for America Corps Member, presented a story focused on a moment that has defined the life of a Granite Stater in our Latino communities. In 2021-22, ¿Qué Hay de Nuevo, New Hampshire? Spanish speakers could access 5-minute daily news capsules via several platforms, including the NHPR website and social media feeds. Listeners can also sign up for our What’s App subscriber list, so they’ll never miss a story.
